Approximately
100 transgender Indonesians from 23 provinces held their first ever national
conference in Bogor, West Java on Sunday.
Conference sessions included discussions about improving the
trans community’s legal rights and ending discrimination.
“Our main
agenda is to empower transsexuals so that their existence is acknowledged,”
said Ms Yulianus Rettoblaut from the Indonesian Transsexuals Communications Forum
(FKWI).
Transgender
Indonesians face police harassment and discrimination in almost all aspects of
their lives, conference delegates heard.
“We demand to
be treated equally as citizens,” Yulianus said.
