news_commission250.jpgFederal Attorney-General, Robert McClelland has announced that Catherine Branson QC will be appointed as the Australian Human Rights Commissioner as of July 12.

Branson was already appointed President of the Australian Human Rights Commission in August last year, and commenced her five-year term in October.

Prior to this she was a judge of the Federal Court of Australia, where she convened the Court’s human rights panel that hears and determines complaints of unlawful discrimination under Commonwealth anti-discrimination laws.

She will take over from Graeme Innes AM, who has been commended for playing a central role in the Commission's national inquiry into discrimination against same-sex couples.

Innes has been re-appointed as the Disability Discrimination Commissioner and will also take up the position of Race Discrimination Commissioner.
