Estelle Getty, who played Sophia on 80s sitcom smash The Golden Girls died Tuesday morning at the age of 84.

Getty, who suffered from dementia, died about 5.35am.

A kind of Sex and the City, but featuring retired women and without the sex (except for Blanche/Samantha), The Golden Girls was a favourite with gay men in the days before gay characters were common on TV.

Getty played the interfering mother of Dorothy, played by Bea Arthur. Arthur's dry, drag queen-esque one-liners were a main attraction of the show.

“Our mother-daughter relationship was one of the greatest comic duos ever, and I will miss her," Arthur said of Getty.

Getty also played Harvey Fierstein's mother in the 1982 Broadway debut of Torch Song Trilogy, a play based on the life and times of a Jewish drag queen.
