MAHALIA BARNES [LIBERATION]
While her famous father is mocking his wicked ways by promoting a wine-infused pasta sauce, this all-growed-up tin lid is having a stab at the big time herself. Miss Mahalia has indeed followed in the same soul footsteps of her chiselled Pa, but with a clearer tone, a younger attitude, and a fresher approach.
Hooking up a gang of dinkie-di Aussies for musical accompaniment (Jade McCrae, Gary Pinto and Jimmy himself on percussion and backing vocals to name but a few), this convincing album of self-penned songs and soul classics will cement Mahalia as a stand-alone local artiste in her own right.
Although at times this sounds a tad like an Idol audition (it didn’t need the trademark Tina ‘Proud Mary’ workout) this is definitely one for soul nuts.
