ESTELLE [ATLANTIC]
Strange as it may seem, it’s taken a lassie from the streets of London to release the best RnB genre album of 2008. Well, so far, anyway. Produced by a host of hotshots like Will.I.Am., Johnny Douglas, Wyclef Jean and Supa Dups, Estelle’s second album shines brighter than her first! Rather than bore us silly with bog standard beats, Estelle mixes it up with nail-biting chick rap, honey sweet 60s soul, air-punching funky house and Beyonce-busting black pop.
There’s something for every member of the rhythm lovin’ queer cohort. Then, just when you think it’s all over, Estelle pulls out the free set of steak knives. She slams it into spangly disco, wobbly reggae, inspiring gospel and convincing rare beats. Shine is a diamond.
