THE GREATEST HITS—RUSSELL MORRIS [EMI]
Welcome to this week’s music history lesson, Aussie Pop 101. Russell
Morris was an huge and instant star, way back in the late 60s, after
his classic Molly Meldrum produced track ‘The Real Thing’ (you know,
the one Kylie covered in Sample People, and which was also used in the
film The Dish) surged to the top of the hit parade.
The ‘I am the walrus’ style chilled-ness was fresh as a daisy, and the
flower power hippy generation adopted it as their new anti-war anthem.
Longhaired Russell was a figurehead for the disaffected, and had
somehow established himself as a teenage rockstar. This compilation
features that track and others, including the re-imagining of ‘Part 3
into Paper Walls’, the acid energy of ‘Mr America’, and the epic
drama-rock of ‘Wings of an Eagle’.
